Job Description

Mount St. Mary’s University has a need for adjunct professors to teach online in the Mount’s integrated, interdisciplinary Core philosophy program both on our traditional Emmitsburg campus and as part of our accelerated undergraduate program. We are currently seeking qualified instructors to teach the following courses online:

  • Foundations of Philosophy (main campus) A course covering classic texts in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy.
  • Philosophy in the Modern Age (main campus) A course covering classic texts in Modern Philosophy.
  • Introduction to Philosophy (Division of Continuing Studies) An investigation of ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary responses to perennial philosophical questions.
  • Moral Philosophy (Division of Continuing Studies) An inquiry into the nature of the moral good and ethical decision making. Prerequisite: Introduction to Philosophy.

Qualifications

A qualified applicant will have:

  • A master's degree in philosophy (required).
  • Demonstrated excellence in online teaching (required).
  • The ability to work with a large and diverse constituency of traditional and non-traditional students, staff, faculty, parents, and friends of the university.

Mount St. Mary’s University’s traditional undergraduate program is dedicated to providing common intellectual experiences in its Core courses. As such, many of the texts studied in the philosophy courses are shared commonly across sections. Training in teaching these texts is available.

Who we Are

Located in a serene mountain setting, yet near major metropolitan areas, Mount Saint Mary’s Emmitsburg campus is the second-oldest Catholic university in the United States. We are a comprehensive, nationally recognized university enrolling 1650 undergraduate students and having a 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio. We support an inclusive faculty that can engage the interests of an increasingly diverse student population.

In addition, the Mount’s satellite campus in Frederick, Maryland serves multiple degree-seeking non-traditional student populations, including veterans and working adults. Most of the courses taught in these programs are eight weeks in length, in online and asynchronous formats. The Mount provides the instructors of these courses with robust technological, pedagogical, and curricular supports and requires instructors to employ high-engagement pedagogical models.

Successful candidates will share our commitment to the dignity and solidarity of all persons and to the value of intercultural understanding. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
